A ‘lunatic happening’ conceived by Intermedia director Werner Aellen and Herb Gilbert of the UBC Fine Arts department to celebrate the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The event took place at the Planetarium beach, starting at ‘moon rise’ and lasting for three days . The event featured a “moon walk”, moon balloons, sand painting and moon poems.

A performative intervention, at Pender Street and Main Street. in downtown Vancouver. Bob “Box” Arnold, placed several configurations of cardboard boxes on the street. Photos were taken of passersby interacting with the box structures. This attracted the interest of the police, who eventually requested the installation be removed.

Mushroom Festival

The mushroom festival was an event that centered on raising the roof of Mick Henry’s new ceramic studio in Robert’s Creek. Intermedia members harvested wild mushrooms and prepared a communal meal. The ceramics studio was on a communal piece of rural land outside of Vancouver.
Box Prototypes
November, 1969
An early version of Michael de Courcy’s Boxes project. The project was sponsored by the Crown Zellerbach corporation. Crown Zellerbach supported Intermedia through their donations of custom made paper products. Specifically the company supported projects by Michael De Courcy, Bob “Box’ Arnold and Gary Lee-Nova all of whom used donated cardboard boxes as material for their work. This partnership between Crown Zellerbach and intermedia was struck up by Intermedia director Werner Aellen. Michael de Courcy’s Boxes were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1970 as part of the Photography into Sculpture a internationally traveling exhibition.
